Moving in Bondi by season: the summer kerb, City2Surf and Sculpture by the Sea

Bondi runs on a rhythm, and the kerb feels it. The same street that is easy to load on a quiet Tuesday in June can be a different proposition on a hot Saturday in January. None of it stops a move — it just changes when you want the truck there. Here is how the year actually plays out.

The evergreen truth: summer and weekends are the squeeze

This part does not change from year to year. The streets nearest the sand — behind Campbell Parade, around Hall Street, down toward the beach — are under the most parking pressure in summer and on weekends, when the beach fills and the metered bays at Queen Elizabeth Drive and Park Drive turn over constantly. Add the buses and the foot traffic, and the middle of a summer weekend is the hardest window to put a truck at the kerb.

The fix is timing, not luck. For a summer or weekend move we aim for an earlier start, away from the peak beach hours, and we confirm the loading spot the day before. The cooler months and weekday mornings are genuinely easier, so if your dates are flexible, that is the lever to pull.

A second evergreen point: the main roads here — Old South Head Road, Bondi Road, Syd Einfeld Drive at the Junction — carry clearways at peak times, where stopping is banned outright. A clearway always overrides the usual loading allowance, so we time the truck to avoid those hours and check the on-street signs rather than quoting a fixed time (the hours are set by Transport for NSW and can change — Live Traffic NSW has the current ones).

The dated events worth knowing (check the year’s dates)

A handful of big annual events close roads right at the beachfront on specific days. These dates move each year, so treat the following as “this happens, look up when”:

  • City2Surf — August. The 14-kilometre run from the city finishes on Bondi Beach, and on race morning both sides of Campbell Parade, Bondi Road and several nearby streets are closed from the early hours until around mid- afternoon. A move right at the beachfront is effectively off the table until Bondi reopens in the afternoon. (The 2025 event was Sunday 10 August; confirm the current year’s date.)
  • Sculpture by the Sea — spring. The free exhibition runs the Bondi to Tamarama coastal walk for about three weeks in spring (the 2025 dates were mid-October to early November), with special-event clearways focused on weekends along Bondi Road and parts of Campbell Parade. It mostly affects the streets closest to the coastal walk, on weekends.

If your move lands on or near one of these, it is not a crisis — it just needs a different time of day or a loading spot a street back. We keep an eye on the calendar and plan around it.

The simple version

Most of the year, a Bondi move is a normal planning job. In summer and on weekends, start earlier and confirm the spot. And if your date happens to clash with City2Surf or Sculpture by the Sea, tell us — we will work the timing around it. Either way, the loading & permit planner will give you a read on your own building, and we are happy to talk through the timing when you ask for a quote.

Event dates and road closures are set by the organisers, Waverley Council and Transport for NSW, and change each year — check the current year’s details before planning around them. Clearway hours are set by Transport for NSW; the street signs and Live Traffic NSW are the authority.

Common questions

Is summer a bad time to move in Bondi?

It is busier, not impossible. Beach parking and foot traffic peak in summer and on weekends, which makes the loading spot and the timing matter more. We usually aim a summer move at an earlier or quieter window and confirm the spot the day before.

Do big Bondi events affect moving day?

Only on the specific event days, and mainly right at the beachfront. City2Surf finishes on Bondi Beach in August and closes Campbell Parade and nearby streets until the afternoon; Sculpture by the Sea runs the coastal walk in spring with weekend clearways. If your move falls on one of those dates, we plan around it — check the current year's dates first.
